Toyota Partners with Tree of Life Clinic to Improve the Process of Providing Quality Free Health Care!

Mary Ware arrives at the Tree of Life Clinic in Tupelo at 6:40 a.m. to ensure she will have a place in line for treatment when the free medical clinic opens at 4:30 that afternoon.  Now, with the efficiencies instituted in the clinic – thanks to the partnership with Toyota – she can arrive later with assurance she will be seen that day.

Since January, members of the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi have partnered with Tree of Life Clinic to provide on-site support – free of charge – helping to improve the clinic flow while preserving doctor/patient interaction time.  The improvements include increasing the number of patients seen while reducing waiting time for those patients by an average of 24 minutes and decreasing the length of the clinic workday for volunteers by an average of one hour.

Established in 2010, Tree of Life Clinic is a free medical clinic that provides basic medical and dental care for people in North Mississippi that is fully staffed by volunteers and 100% funded by donations.  Open two days a month (1st Wednesday and 3rd Saturday), the clinic sees approximately 80 patients on Wednesdays and 120 on Saturdays for those who do not have health insurance, cannot afford to pay for medical care or may not be eligible for Medicare/Medicaid.

“When we opened Tree of Life Clinic we knew there was a need for medical services for people with no health insurance and not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, and we were overwhelmed with patients from the first day,” said Polly Bailey, clinic manager and co-founder with her physician-husband Dr. Joe Bailey.  “Every person on our staff is a volunteer.  We have always worked hard to ensure that we provide the best service with the increasing influx of patients. Now we want to take the concepts Toyota has shown us and incorporate them along with the philosophy of continuous improvement to provide the best care with the facilities and volunteer staff we have.”

Toyota, through its nonprofit arm, TSSC, shares its manufacturing know-how to help nonprofits and small to mid-size manufacturing companies optimize the way they work by making substantial ‘process improvements’ by increasing safety, quality, productivity and decreasing costs.  Nearly 200 organizations – including some of North America’s most successful enterprises – have used TSSC’s support.

Toyota Mississippi President Masafumi Hamaguchi added, “Toyota Mississippi partnered with TSSC and the Tree of Life Clinic to work on this project. It is Toyota Mississippi’s honor to help the clinic better serve their customers. We are happy to donate our time and energy to this important community project.”

Lisa Richardson, TSSC’s project leader, explained, “Specifically, we worked on improving the patient and volunteer experience. On one hand the volunteers (doctors, nurses, pharmacies and support staff) work long hours and on the other patients are willing to wait for long periods of time to guarantee that they’re seen by the doctor. So we focused on several improvements to maximize everyone’s experience,” she added.

Some improvements include:

  • Re-organizing the lobby to maximize patient flow
  • Improving the filing system helped reduce check-in process time (30% of files were purged and a new filing system was introduced);
  • Standardizing the quantity and location of supplies in the pharmacy and exam room.

By implementing these improvements, the Wednesday shift pharmacy staff  has finished as early as 8:30 p.m. where previously volunteers worked until 9:30 or 10 p.m.  And from the moment the patient checks-in until they leave, the average wait time reduction per patient is 24 minutes.

TSSC, a subsidiary of Toyota’s manufacturing & engineering headquarters in Erlanger, Ky., shares Toyota’s manufacturing know-how with nonprofits like Tree of Life Clinic by focusing on process improvement activities ‘doing more with less’ in a condensed manner.  TSSC’s on-site support typically lasts 3-6 months. The idea is for the leaders of the nonprofit to learn Toyota’s manufacturing know-how so they can teach it to their team and become self-reliant.

“This project with Tree of Life has been fulfilling,” Doug Formby, Toyota Mississippi vice president, exclaimed. “Not only for the team that worked tirelessly on this project, but for other Mississippi team members that volunteer their personal time here. It is our intent to continue this relationship with Tree of Life Clinic.”

Additionally, Toyota provided a $20,000 grant for medications.

The Tree of Life Clinic video can be accessed on the TSSC website at www.tssc.com.  Once you reach this page, please click on the Tree of Life Clinic Video button.

Toyota Motor Sales Paces Ahead of the Industry in June!

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported June 2013 sales results of 195,235 units, an increase of 14 percent over June 2012 on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.  On a raw-volume basis, unadjusted for 26 selling days in June 2013 versus 27 selling days in June 2012, TMS sales increased 9.8 percent from the year-ago month.

Toyota Division posted June 2013 sales of 173,880 units, up 14.4 percent year-over-year on a DSR basis.   On a raw volume basis, Toyota Division sales were up 10.2 percent over the year-ago month.

For the first half of the year, TMS reported sales of 1,108,791 units. With 153 selling days in the first half of 2013 versus 154 selling days during the same period in 2012, sales were up 6.7 percent on a DSR basis.  Unadjusted, sales were up 6 percent year-over-year.

“The auto industry led the economic recovery through the first half of 2013, kicking off a strong summer selling season, which we expect will carry into the second half of the year," said Bill Fay, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "Sales in June were solid, and demand didn’t skip a beat.  Customers are already showing an interest in the all-new Corolla, our hybrid lineup had its best-ever June and Camry topped 35,000 units.”

Lexus reported June 2013 sales of 21,355 units, up 10.8 percent on a DSR basis, and up 6.7 percent over last year on a raw volume basis.

“Thanks to the 2014 Lexus IS that went on sale last Friday, we had our best non-holiday weekend in six years,” said Steve Hearne, Lexus sales vice president. “With its bold design and sporty performance, the new F SPORT model is proving to be a homerun at our dealerships. With the new IS, as well as the strong-selling ES and LS models, Lexus has three of the hottest cars in the luxury segment.”

Toyota Investing $200M in Southern Manufacturing!

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA), announced today that its Alabama engine plant and Bodine Aluminum casting plants will invest a combined $200 million to boost machining capacity and engine parts production for V6 engines.

Today's announcement represents Toyota's ninth manufacturing investment in North America over the past two years that now totals more than $2 billion. The result of this new investment is more than 4,000 new jobs solidifying Toyota's commitment to designing, developing and assembling vehicles in the region.

Toyota's Alabama engine plant's $150 million investment in this project represents its fifth significant new investment since it began operations a decade ago. Toyota Alabama's total investment will be $850 million once the machining project is complete by July 2015.

As previously announced, Toyota Alabama will hire approximately 125 upon completion of its current $80 million V6 engine assembly expansion by early 2014; its total employment will be 1,150. Annual engine capacity will be nearly 750,000 units.

Toyota Alabama currently assembles 4-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines for eight of 12 Toyota vehicles assembled in North America. It is the only Toyota plant globally to produce these three types of engines under one roof.

Bodine Aluminum, wholly-owned by Toyota Motor Corporation and a manufacturer of casting parts, will invest $50 million and create a total of 40 new jobs at its plant in Troy, Mo., and 10 new jobs at its plant in Jackson, Tenn., to provide cylinder heads and blocks to Toyota Alabama. Bodine's total investment will top $650 million and will employ nearly 1,100 at its three locations once the machining project begins.

In addition to Toyota Alabama, Bodine also provides cylinder heads and blocks to Toyota's engine manufacturing facilities in Kentucky and West Virginia.

"Today's investment of $200 million into three separate Toyota facilities demonstrates Toyota's commitment to North America and our localization efforts," said Osamu "Simon" Nagata, president and CEO of TEMA. "Our commitment to our local communities where we produce engines, engine parts and vehicles has never been stronger thanks to our team members and their continued focus on safety, quality and continuous improvement."

"Toyota Alabama continues to play a key role in our efforts to build engines in the region for our loyal customers," said Jim Bolte, president of Toyota Alabama. "This vote of confidence gives our team members and community partners added motivation as we move towards our vision of becoming the most admired company in the state."

"Bodine's 100 years as a successful American manufacturer is a direct result of our exceptional workforce in Missouri and Tennessee," said Bob Lloyd, president of Bodine. "We look forward to serving our customer in Alabama, and ultimately, our loyal customers who drive Toyotas every day."

Toyota digs deeper, targets reforestation, carbon reduction!

Auto giant Toyota Motor Corp. has gone beyond merely creating hybrid cars. It has looked at the much bigger picture, and has funded reforestation projects as well as helped in creating a low-carbon emitting society. It knows, however, that implementing its vision too soon on a global scale would be akin to Don Quixote calling for a duel with the windmills. So, it has set its sights on a more manageable scale—in its sprawling Toyota City in Nagoya.

Forty journalists flew in at Nagoya and traveled for 40 minutes to reach Toyota City, a 91,847-hectare (918.47-square-kilometer) industrial society which, ironic to its classification, is a “low-carbon producing society” on 62,754 ha of forest. Here, an industrialized urban area and Mother Nature coexist. As of March 1, Toyota City has a population of 44,135 (In comparison, Metro Manila,  638.6 sq km large, has a population of nearly 12 million.)

So, how does an environmental model city that targets a 50-percent reduction in its carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 look like?

Toyota City features prototype smart homes, electric vehicles and an ultraefficient traffic system. The city’s “life pulse” was demonstrated at the Toyota Ecoful Town, where a pavilion illustrated energy management systems, new technologies on traffic management and safety, an on-demand bus system and pedestrian detection systems, among other things. Toyota’s perspective on the smart community focuses on local management from the viewpoint of motor vehicles, houses, and information and energy management.

Journalists saw city-fit compact electric cars in action. These ultracompact electric vehicles were used in a self-service vehicle-sharing system complementing public transportation. The energy consumption of the smart homes were closely managed and monitored by homeowners using modern devices. The energy used for the homes was from the sun, and even from homeowners’ cars that had excess energy (the vehicle, in effect, serving as a mobile generator). There are also systems that optimize the use of energy in public spaces.

The energy management system in Toyota City virtually began in August 2010, when the Toyota City Low-Carbon Society Verification Promotion Council was established. In October 2010, the system development for energy began in earnest. The first model house was completed in June 2011. The first group of residents started living in smart houses later that year. In March 2011, the development of a vehicle with V2H (vehicle-to-home) functionality was completed. The Toyota Ecoful Town was opened in May 2012. And in October 2012, the Urban Transport System called “Ha:mo” started operations.

Members of the international motoring press were also given the chance to go on a circuit run and public road drive on Toyota City using the Prius plug-in hybrid, Estima hybrid, Lexus RX 450h, Lexus CT200h, Alphard hybrid and the Prius CX. The most challenging part was competing with each other in a fuel miser run using the Prius in the 1.561-km Spa Nishiura Motor Park circuit.
Before the run, we were given tips on how to optimize the energy efficiency of each Prius variant. The instruction was to go full-speed on straight runs so as not to consume much time, and then slow down to average speeds (to optimize the use of electric vehicle mode) on corners and turns.
Having driven a Prius in various occasions for the past four years around the Philippines, my running average was somewhere between 20 and 24 kilometers per liter. This writer thought that the circuit run would be a walk in the park. Apparently, some drivers were even more lightfooted. The tandem of Toyota engineers, as expected, topped the event at 32 kpl, while the Philippine team of Top Gear’s Dinzo Tabamo and Toyota Motor Philippines’ Tonyo Silva squeezed out 29.75 km, and they were declared overall winners. My team (I was the designated driver, while Bernadette Magkilat of Manila Bulletin was navigator) got 23.35 km.

Apparently, the Prius could run even more efficiently. The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism lists the Prius’ optimum fuel economy reading at 38 kpl, after up to 15 test cycles.

Toyota developed and sold the world’s first mass-produced hybrid in response to environmental issues. The vehicle’s seamless interplay between the electric and gasoline engine is managed by the breakthrough Hybrid Synergy Drive and its intelligent energy-management system. Its seat cushion, scuff plates and other interior components are made of ecological plastic.

According to Toyota, popularizing hybrid vehicles is the key to reducing fossil fuel reliance. Its engineers stressed that the hybrid technology is the core technology that can be applied to a variety of next-generation environmental vehicles.

The utopia at Toyota City merely showed the Prius in its natural, perfect habitat.

Next Generation Toyota Corolla Unveiled With Extravaganza of Experiential Events!

Dramatic sights, sounds and tastes helped introduce the strikingly re-styled 11th generation Toyota Corolla at a packed celebration inside Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. on Thursday night.

More than 750 consumers, journalists and Toyota guests took in a captivating theatrical performance by Fuerza Bruta, fog clouds from celebrity chef Richard Blais’s liquid nitrogen cocktails, and the capstone reveal of the 2014 Corolla lowered from the rafters with a surprise visit from comedian Adam Carolla.

The multi-sensory experiences celebrated an iconic compact vehicle with nearly 50 years of success and almost 40 million global sales. The sleeker, more advanced 2014 Corolla features chiseled, modern character lines, a more premium interior, improved fuel economy and an enhanced driving performance. Each trim level (L, LE, LE Eco, and S) will offer a range of popular features designed to delight current Toyota customers and attract new, youthful buyers.

“Full of surprises and unexpected features, this global reveal event captured the new era and elevated experience of the redesigned Corolla,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “As our second best-selling vehicle and a familiar sight on American roadways, the new Corolla retains its trusted quality and reliability while adding an exciting new look and energy.”

At the beginning of the evening, guests sampled innovative culinary creations including roasted pork belly with licorice grits and pickled peaches from Blais’s custom menu. Blais, who recently published his first cookbook, Try This at Home, is perhaps best known from his appearance on Season 4 of Bravo’s hit show “Top Chef” and his winning run on “Top Chef All-Stars,” for which he received his own Corolla among other prizes. Partnering with Los Angeles gourmet catering company Along Came Mary, Blais prepared items in front of guests, including the fog-inducing liquid nitrogen margaritas.

After tasting from each culinary station, guests were ushered into a newly revealed second space where the first of three viscerally stimulating Fuerza Bruta acts began. Fuerza Bruta (“brute force” in Spanish) is a critically acclaimed, live experience show first founded in Argentina then introduced in New York City in 2007. Elevated above the guests, some in tanks of water, the performers put on a 30-minute, high-energy acrobatic show.

As a finale to the spectacular performance, a 2014 Corolla descended from the ceiling while three additional new Corollas appeared from a hidden space, surprising and delighting guests with their new design. With a new longer wheelbase and  roomier premium interior, the new Corolla offers a collection of enhanced features including standard LED headlamps and Bluetooth® connectivity, along with available touchscreen audio, backup monitor, Smart Key, paddle shifters and Entune®, Toyota’s multimedia app suite.

During Fay’s brief remarks about the Corolla, car enthusiast and comedian Carolla interrupted from the side of the stage and joined to joke about being the “oldest Corolla in the room,” referring the similarities of the vehicle name and the comedian’s own last name . Carolla further described growing up in a working class community in the 1970s and 1980s and the value of the Corolla to many friends and families. Representing that era was a 1969 Corolla, from the Toyota Museum in Torrance, Calif.  In addition, three other vintage Corollas from the museum were on display, including models from 1971, 1983 and 1987.

At the conclusion of the presentation, DJs The Hood Internet kicked off music while guests were encouraged to explore and view the 2014 Corolla models.

Toyota’s Prius v and Avalon on Kelley Blue Book’s List Of 10 Best Family Cars!

The editors of Kelley Blue Book selected the 2013 Prius v and the 2013 Avalon for their list of 10 Best Family Cars. The list is compiled annually by KBB.com editors to highlight vehicles that address unique family specifications and situations, and offer innovation.

“Our annual list is aimed at helping families find the right ride and always include something for everyone, with a special nod to what is new,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com.

Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com editors offer these thoughts on the two Toyota models:

2013 Toyota Prius v
“Let's say you love Toyota vehicles and want the exceptional fuel economy of a hybrid, but the standard Prius just isn't big enough. Then consider the 2013 Prius v, which comes jam-packed with all the Prius-ness you crave while also offering roughly 50 percent more cargo space. Yes, plus-sizing the Prius cuts combined fuel economy from 50 mpg to 42 mpg, but among family-friendly vehicles the Prius v remains a mileage champ.”

2013 Toyota Avalon
“Renowned for its spacious interior quarters, abundance of luxury features and sofa-soft ride, the fully redesigned Toyota Avalon can now add "high style" to its list of highlights. In addition, laudable fuel economy coupled with an exemplary reputation for reliability and quality, make the 2013 Avalon a smart buy for today's value-conscious family.”

Toyota and National Center for Family Literacy Launch $10 Million Initiative!

Toyota and the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) are launching Toyota Family Learning, a six-year initiative that will create a new model for literacy by expanding it beyond the walls of the classroom and into homes and communities. This new initiative will engage families in learning together both online and offline, incorporating digital elements launching later this year, including a website, mobile app, social media and more. Today, the first phase of Toyota Family Learning goes live: a grant program for communities to fund new family mentor and service learning programs targeting vulnerable families.

Five organizations will be awarded a three-year, $175,000 grant, in addition to a wide range of NCFL training and communication support, learning items and materials. Fifteen grants will be awarded over the course of the six-year initiative. Schools, libraries and community-based organizations that provide services to families are eligible to apply. Submissions are being accepted now through June 24 at www.toyotafamilylearning.org. Submissions will be evaluated on a number of factors, including strength of existing services, commitment from community partners, and strength and innovation of proposal. Grant recipients will be notified in July.

“The vision for Toyota Family Learning is to become a modern-day movement for families learning together and this grant program launch is the first of many steps we’ll be taking in the coming months and years to make that vision a reality,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder, NCFL. “The components of this initiative are all rooted in increasing Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time® that is so critical to improving family literacy.”

“For over 20 years, we’ve been proud and humbled by our partnership with NCFL, which has helped more than one million families learn and grow together,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president of National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation at Toyota Motor North America. “We’re excited to build on this with the new Toyota Family Learning initiative and look forward to seeing how local community organizations will help expand our work beyond the classroom and into homes and communities.”

This new initiative is the latest in Toyota’s long-standing support of NCFL’s mission to advance family learning and literacy. Since 1991, Toyota has been a strategic partner to NCFL, providing more than $36 million to fund 256 literacy programs nationwide and impacting more than 1 million families. Program highlights include:

• Toyota Family Literacy Program: brings parents and children from immigrant families together in a classroom to learn and engage with culturally relevant programming.

• Toyota Teacher of the Year award: annually recognizes individual educators for their efforts to improve literacy among learners of all ages. The winner receives a $20,000 grant to implement his or her classroom project.

• Toyota Families in Schools: establishes learning services in schools and engages parents and at-risk students aged 5 to 12 years old by providing academic and home-life support.
